wow, you must have posted on the wrong thread........
Beacause that is what this thread is about........
read post #8, #12, #13 etc.
It's about getting 30mpg AT 70MPH.
THen you said: " I do believe, with some modification (electric fan, intake exhaust, etc.) 30 would be very possible consistently."
so '30 what'? 30 ducks? 30 bats?
30 mpg at 42.5mph?
The discussion, for 6 pages is not can an explorer get 30 mpg at some speed.
It is that it cant get it doing 70mph.
You said 30 (mpg at 70mph) would be very possible consistently.
I call bs.

the funny thing was that I was running tires @ 29" diameter, and then dropped to tires @ 27.5" diameter and it actually increased my FE by a slight margin, or I stayed at the same. due strictly to the fact that my engine had to work much less to gain and maintain speed. with the 29's, going over a simple overpass, would drop my gear into drive, and occasionally into 3rd... once I put the 27's on, it never dropped out of OD.
I could, but I wont

Mike, frank lee has discussed this quite a lot.
Trucks, suvs due to the nature of the design, rarely benefit from taller tires. It seems that the gearing (for heavy loads) is already optimal.
Also, in my car experience w/ taller tires (i swear by them) you have to do at least 50% of your driving at freeway speed to see a marked benifit.

I apologize and should have clarified, my driving is all done at 55 mph or less. I avoid the interstate (as all the wannabe racers and ignorant drivers tick me off, not to say that this generalization applies to everyone out there, just a select few) and was simply stating that it would should be possible to obtain 30+ mpg under 60 mph. 30 at 70 mph, I agree is B.S. This guy apparently has no clue how to figure up mileage correctly. Mine averages 16-17 mpg or less at anything above 65 mph. I will make sure I clarify in more detail on my next reply.

Alot ignorant we had here.
I trade in truck for 99 explorer V6 4.0L SOHC 4wd 4 door.
Mileage after I did some repair that was neglected. Mileage was average on highway at 23-24 mpg at 68 mph but hills plus bad alignment/ wheel bearing on passenger side. Exhaust leak on head.
After ran in trouble that Ford's engineer had worst idea for 4wd on front hub are actually spin all times never disengage.
Mine is totally stock and I haven't done any mod that Aldive did to his explorer.

again, really appreciate the random comments.....BUT!!!!!
this thread is about 30 mpg at 70 mph. PERIOD.
If you want to 'chime in' then stick to the topic and the facts.
This guy is NOT getting 30mpg at 70mph in an Explorer.
(and saving 100lbs on a lighter hood makes no difference at all.)
I want to know what speed he goes to get 30 mpg.

IIRC, that Explorer dude really had it in for people who sped. He would even post about how his son would get bad gas mileage because of speeding in that exact same 30 MPG Explorer.
