if I am 50% over in my car should that carry over to another?

I am currently getting in the neighorhood of 50% over EPA in my 95 honda civic. When I hypermile I get in the 50-55mpg range (some trips are a lot higher some are a bit lower depending on elevation change mostly)

EPA says the car should get 36mpg combined. When I don't hypermile I get in 38-42 mpg range on my commute which is about 40 miles round trip mostly in 45mpg area with one 55mpg stretch about 2 miles long.

Is it a good guess that given a newerish car with similar EPA guestimate, similar mods (kill switch mostly), and a manual transmition that I am likely to stay in the same Mileage range?

If I were to find a "ventage" insight how much over the EPA SWAG would I be looking at?

Surprisingly enough my daily trip is almost the identical distance, and I drive an Insight, but it is a CVT.

I can usually get a little over 70 MPG on the route I drive regularly.

It's very close to the same percentage.

The difference is I don't employ any of the more difficult hypermiling techniques, and the car is unmodified.

I've found its pretty easy for me to consistently hit 30% above EPA in automatic transmission vehicles, and higher in manual trans vehicles. This has been consistent amongst a bunch of cars I have driven. I'd imagine if you do the same things in a different vehicle your % will stay relatively the same.

Do note that hybrids (see my sig) are a different story.

Just as a comparison I have an '04 F-150 that I easily obtain 20% higher MPG than their suggested values.

I agree with the others. The higher the factory rating, the harder it will be to beat that rating. For a fairly similar car, though, you should perform similarly. If you drove a Corolla, for instance, I'd expect you to see the same 50-55 mpg.

The best hypermiler I know of in an MT Insight (1) is getting ~115 mpg averages these days. That's 116% above the (new) epa combined. I, driving similarly to what he does, can get ~150% above (new) epa in my civic.

ok thanks that is kind of what I thought. I had figured most hybreds make their gains by smoothing out driving style much the same as hypermiling technique do.

I think newer vehicles would be harder to beat the EPA by the same percentage. Because of old EPA numbers. And because newer vehicles usually have more enhancements for better mpg, whether it be aero or engine tuning. Newer vehicles are usually more controlled and you can't mess with it's brain as much to persuade it to change shift points, etc.

i dont know about u but the terrain is my biggest faul.

i dont see why u couldnt get the same, if the technology is the same.


my old tacom 4x4 i could 24 mpg with out trying hard, buyt my 81 carbed i cant harldy get over 21mpg , both were rated the same well close.
