Vanagon Boat Tail

[QUOTE=kach22i;379742]The Vanagon/ boat tail is my neighbors, the late Robert Parsons.Bob went to the Yucatan Peninsula each year for beach camping, and always one for efficiency, fabricated the EMT skeleton, which his wife Jacque tailored and sewed the fabric cover, to help stretch fuel on these L-O-N-G trips south.
Few Vanagon owners could fathom the mpg Bob reported (high-twenties).
It's nice that an image survives.

I wondered what you'd think when I saw that.

kach22i -- mrscharroo most interesting photos on FlickeFlu is pure gold. But boy is it an unfriendly website ('No right-clicking for you!'). The same material in a friendlier format, sorted better and with supporting captions is at Flickr: mrscharroo's Photostream

While I recognized a few, the Standard Superior, the Cord, the Maifly—I was completely blown away by how many were totally new to these weary old eyes. It turns out rebodied Isettas with conventional doors were a thing. Who knew?

This is easily my favorite, I could graft that nose onto my Very Light Volkswagen Concept. Can you see the similarity to a VW Beetle door?

Great freebeard, thanks for posting that.

Somehow I thought that Gyro-X was a Davis model I had not seen before.

Aerohead, the story you shared about the VW van tail is appreciated. Did you consult them prior to fabrication by any chance?

EDIT: I know it's a Photoshop, but I just had to post this somewhere.

Yeah,Bob knew about my VW van project from college (I still have the van) and I put a booklet together for him with everything I had on tails.
It was up to him to design and fabricate from there.
Bob was an,artist, designer, engineer, pilot, who grew up in the Texas Tech machine shop;had worked at Vought and did AUTOCAD design,job-shop work
for Boeing.
He was no newcomer to aerodynamics, although he was surprised about differences with road vehicles.
He would have gotten a big kick out of your design work and modelling.
He had one of the best shops I've ever been in,and he was into everything.
We miss him.

The next one down on the Pelican Part page:

I saw a rear view of this once, but I didn't Save. It's symmetrical. Aerodynamic?

I tried following the link to find out if that red and white car is turbine powered, and landed on page 2 of Paul Woodbury's Flickr Photostream. He likes 914s.

2,794 pictures. Yikes.

The rear bumper in that Bel Geddes rendering works on a[n half-circular] VW Beetle, but on that it looks like a short, wide parachute. With 2 foot long bumper brackets.

This was news to me:

After a series of experiments, he built a real car in his garage, using the Soviet GAZ-A (a license-built Ford Model A) chassis.
