Hello all

Hi. Trying my best with a 2008 Dodge Magnum SXT RWD (3.5L V6). I did some hypermiling before with an AWD Aztek on the cleanmpg.com site but fell out of it over the last year.

I have a DiabloSport inTune to improve it's efficiency. I installed the 93 oct tune due to minimum required octane is 89 and Costco's 93 is cheaper than getting 89 elsewhere. I dropped the idle rpm 50 rpms. I will see how it runs that way and may try lower. Also reduced the throttle back 15%. The 93 oct (Diablo) tune really cranks up the throttle response. It was fun to drive but hard to take it easy on gas. I will be asking for parameters to watch (a new thread) to watch my mpg since there is no mpg on my model.

I have also lowered it about 1 inch with BC Racing coilovers (strut/shock replacement). I could go lower but Snow is coming here in MI. Not sure how adjusting the rebound on the BC coilovers could affect mileage. Would a firm ride be better or a soft ride?

SXT6 already has a belly pan under the engine.

Wanting to get a new intake but due to the coilovers and tuner I don't have funds for that. I have opened it up by removing the muffler from the intake and diverting cold air toward the new opening from the radiator grill opening.

Trying to do driving with load (dwl). I typically top around 60 mph on the highway so I may research a different route to/from work to stay off the highway.

I like the idea of creating some grill blocks. Seeing as it is cold now it may just have to wait. (no garage for me )

Anyway that is what I am starting with. Any technique suggestions?

Welcome to the site.

My first mod is almost always a grill block.

My brother in law has an '07 magnum r/t. I also suggest a grille block, those cars have some pretty enormous openings.

What kind of mileage are you getting now? Do you have autostick? Is it the 4spd or 5spd?

1. by a scan gauge II (see first link in my sig)
1a. read a lot of posts
2. create a base line
3. raise psi in tires to 40+
test each mod using the scangauge and the base line.

Thanks for the tips.

I had to roll back the lower RPMs on idle. Just 50 RPMs lower caused dimming of the electrical system. Affected the headlights and dash. Once, at a red light the engine died. Not good for safety.

I unfortunately have the 4 speed trans. Wanted the 5 speed auto stick but this Magnum came quite loaded and that was the only problem. Kinda fell in love with it so I didn't shop around like I should have.

As for milage, I entered my logs from since I installed the DiabloSport tune. (look for SXT6 in the garage or vehicleid=8797 since I can't post links yet) A few tanks were pure fun and not eco at all. Need to fill up in the morning so the current 22.2 mpg should go up. Still it is 11% above EPA.

I am going to stick with the current tune for one more week. This should give me a couple of fillups for a baseline. Then I want to switch to the 89 oct tune and see if I can run 87 oct in it without knocks in the engine. The only problem with this is that the temps are dropping so I am not sure how that affects things.

Dropping temps definitely hurt mpgs.

Here is a photo:

I want to do a full upper grill block. At least for the winter I think it should be fine.

I saw a post about rear bumpers being a big drag. I think that is the case here. The bumper is just a U shape with the open area facing to the front of the car. I wander if I can use something to smooth that up.

It is a common misconception that there is some huge parachute effect back there. Venting the bumper increases drag and belly-panning it possibly reduces drag, but I doubt the manufacturer's aerodynamicists would leave such an easy area to fix unfixed if it was very bad.
