New springs in the injectors will probably bring the break off pressure from 13-1500 PSI up to 1800 PSI which is probably new specs. If you cant find them but have access to a tester, then shim the injectors to get the max pressure as specified. Run some Red LIne through them after you get the pressures up to specs, and the smoking will drop dramatically and your mileage will improve significantly with optimal fuel atomization.

Specs quoted are for the 83 MB diesels, but they are probably close to the same.

Also check to make sure the throttle control allows WOT, if it has a butterfly. MB went throttle less in 1982, but before that a 240 D with a maladjusted throttle linkage was the slowest car I ever drove in my life.
