Just shooting from the hip, even if you completely blocked off the radiator, it's unlikely that you'd realize anything beyond a 3.5% mpg improvement. That would be at a steady 70-mph.

A natural variability between 36mpg and 82mpg, weather and route dependent, is a pretty bold statement. If you were to drive during a cold day like anyone normally would, and then during warm weather, one of your routes was entirely downhill and all you did was idle in neutral and coast for the entire route, yeah maybe.
If I only get 3% out of this grill block, I’m ok with that. 3% of 42mpg, which is a somewhat conservative figure during the summer for me, would be a 1.26mpg increase. Since this grill block off has only costed me about $3.50 (mostly because I want a long 10mm bolt to relocate my license plate, which isn’t totally necessary but I like the clean look and that it serves to block off as well), I would travel about 14 miles further per tank (11 gallon fill up) and save about $1.10 per fill up. Not much, but it’s the first aero mod I’ve done, still only costed me $3.50, it was fun to do, and I personally like the new look of the bumper better. It has a pretty clean look to it in my opinion.
I’ll post some pics soon. I think you’re right that I shouldn’t expect too much, but it also didn’t require much.
