Nice! Do you remember the article he wrote about 5.0 Mustangs for Cars Illustrated? When he bought a brand new one and took it street racing when they first came out? One of my friends is a total 5.0 Mustang fanatic, and he tried to find Tony's old car just so he could say he owned it. He actually managed to track Tony down and talk to him, he now owns a coffee shop and drives a slant six Duster if you can believe it. The Mustang from that article is a gutted race car shell now, sitting in a back yard in the Poconos, the current owner has no clue or interest in the history of it. That's a bit of a hike from Vancouver, but one day we may just make the trip to go get it!

Yes I do. Man, Tony was a beast back in the day, and I was saddened when Cars Illustrated folded. To me, it was ahead of it's time, and a good gut shot to the other rags that were out there.

Man this is the deal that just won't die! I looked at the Jetta again today, you just look at the key and the thing starts, like half a crank and it's running. But I noticed that once it is running the tach acts really weird. You rev it up and the tach stays around 1000 rpms. Granted it was still cold when I was looking at it, but is that something these cars do or is it an indicator that something is odd about it?

It's old and probably needs a good cleaning of connectors, grounds, blah, blah, blah.
You really want this car don'tchya?

It more than likely needs a new alternator, or at least the belt. The tech is driven by the W removal on the alternator.

Ahhh I see, thanks Christ, I thought maybe it was an indicator of something funky going on.
The guy wants $1000 for it, I want it for free, so I thought my offer to meet him in the middle at $500 was reasonable. Didn't work. Now it's just out of principle that I can't pay full price for it!

Ok, test drive it for $1000, and when the oil light/buzzer comes on, because the oil warning system works on the tach signal, explain that you'll willingly pay 750$, because it will need at least an oil pump, at worst bearings and a rebuild.
It's rather unfortunate, but if the car is at least in running/ driving condition, and will pass an inspection with limited work, its worth $1000, and will probably save that in fuel costs for the average commuter in a short time.

I'd love to have one of the Insights and a WVO diesel around, best of both worlds I think. The Jetta will be more for experimenting than anything else, so I don't want to spend a lot on it just in case I mess it up!
