Joining the hypermiling club this month-inisght/tdi

So i've finally decided i'm sick of spending all my beer money on gas. I currently drive (well drove) a 2007 civic si and while i got pretty good mpg i was always obsessing on how to drive to get better mpg and that led me to this forum. It's borderlining obsession.

Anyways i've been scanning the detroit metro craigslist and there's a LOT of junk. Like, all kinds of flippers, salvage titles, ext ext.

So far i've narrowed the car choices down to an insight-a golf tdi-a civic-or a mazda 3.

Had a perfect 1998 civic one owner with 130k miles but couldn't buy it due to being on vacation and of course someone got it.

These are the cars. Budget isn't a problem, obviously i'd rather spend less and will be negotiating heavily.

2000 Honda Insight

2002 Honda Insight (Limited Edition)-Hybrid

2003 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI

2002 Golf GL TDI (LOW MILEAGE)

any insight to these cars is appreciated (no pun intended). I plan to pull the trigger sometime this month.

thanks

zach

If you want the Ferrari of fuel economy vehicles, get an Insight. (5MT only!)

A modded one will give you 80-100 mpg all day long at 50 mph on a level road in good weather.

Some will warn you of high repair costs, but at the age & price of those cars, you'll be prepared to drive one with crunchy 2nd gear synchros and a dead (or weak) hybrid pack. I didn't really have to put a penny in my 2000 Insight in the 2 years I owned it.

Highly entertaining to pilot one, managing its various systems for best effect.
