I think instantaneous, trip, and long-term MPG should be mandated in all cars sold, along with tire-pressure monitoring with alarm.
After all, the US Gov't has decided fuel economy is enough of a national security interest to mandate 35.5 CAFE standards, but the effects of that are mitigated if poorly-tuned cars are driven wastefully.
Fact is, people are competitive by nature. Even if you assume a driver who couldn't care less about MPG, with the numbers right in front of her, she'll start trying to "get the high score."
Secondly, people who "can't be bothered" to check tire pressure will fix a low tire real quick if the alternative is "BLEEE...." the entire time they're in the car.
Wouldn't surprise me if these two minor changes couldn't up the "actual" CAFE by close to 1MPG.
