i like the thermocouple idea. ill defiantly do that. i'll drill into the cat somewhere with a drill the same diameter as the thermocouple. then super glue it in place. is that the best fixation method? maybe i can trap a thermocouple in between a flange connection somewhere?

i take it that measuring the manifold temperature is not good enough?

The EGT probe should be as close to the head as possible. Drilling into the manifold is a much better idea. Take a look at how commercial EGT gauges are mounted.

Superglue most certainly will not hold anything to your exhaust FYI. You'll need a welder, silly.

Even just wrapping some wire around the thermocouple and the manifold should be good enough, you are just looking for consistant contact so you can compared the stock settings manifold thermocouple voltage and your new voltage once you lean the engine out. You don't really need to know what the actual temps are.
Anyways, don't wreck your car for a few mpg...
If your exhaust looks anything like this, you are probably in for big repairs!

cant i just wedge it in between a flange joint somewhere and back it up inside to reach the manifold?
