Look to overseas to see...VW had a Diesel car rated at 75MPG, and there are/were others with high MPG...

It's basically outlawed as you once said about vapor carbs, both for the same reason because they are doing the same thing. VW has one over 100mpg and that is not steady state cruise 100mpg but real world EPA type testing 100 mpg. But it doesn't meet emissions. In Montana even if any of this stuff was illegal you could do it as there is no testing or enforcement. I bet a lot of other states are the same.

Agreed, water injection on a diesel at least will reduce NOx.
And I think it does on gasoline engine.

Sorry had a brain fart. It reduces nox but can increase hydrocarbon emissions.

Why do you bring up vehicles that are optimised?

The VW L1, The Pogue Vapor Car, the Shell Eco Racer . . . all are optimized to do one thing - get great MPG. You want to find a "device" you can slap on any gasoline engine and double mileage? You want it cheap enough so you can sell it to the general public? You want it to pass the most stringent emission laws currently in effect and slated to be enforced?

I brought up the work of Transonic because it is a lesson in the difficulty of what you ask. They doubled the thermal efficiency of the average gasoline engine of the time but at a great redesign to the whole concept of fuel management and mechanical utilization. What you seek is plausible, but it will take more research acumen and much deeper pockets. And it will not be a simple plug in device. It will be a ground up build like the VW L1 is.

You want a silver bullet when there simply is none.

In real world testing at the hands of Road and Track it got 128 mpg after the battery was depleted. So eliminate the hybrid part all together and it looks like it is an over 100mpg car even in the hands of guys used to Ferraris and Bugattis. It doesn't meet any of our crash testing and certainly not out restrictive new car diesel emission standards. It does show what is possible if you didn't care about that stuff. The emissions is not really fair, this little .8 liter is "dirty" getting over 100 mpg while a F250 with 6.7 liters is supposedly clean but is burning 10 times as much diesel and running 8 times as much air through the engine. So it's pollution/volume seems better but it's actual pollution is much higher.

Thank God our government won't let us make ourselves unsafe in something like this or a Tata from India for that matter. I have to ride my nice safe motorcycle to get this kind of MPG of the VW, or value of the Tata.
