Making my truck a stop and go hybrid

So I want my truck to automatically shut itself off when it is idling, both at a stop and when P&Ging. Could I get it to regen brake or coast? Could I then delete the alternator? So what would I need to accomplish this?
A larger starter motor?
A battery pack?
Some sort of ECM sorcery to know when to turn the engine off and on?

your brain can determine when best to cut the motor better than any ECM could.

(kill switch on the left, starter on the right)

It becomes 2nd nature very quickly

No regen, but I can bump start in 5th at 5mph once the engine is warmed up
I also deleted the alternator. Original starter, but deepcycle batteries, and a 15W solar panel (sits on the dash while driving, on the roof when parked) and a back up 120v charger in case I need to drive a number of hours during a rainy week.

I knew a guy who had a switch on his alt and turned it off under wot.

Yeah, I believe him that he removed those parts, looks like even the cruse control servo. I wonder if he has a v8 if removing the push rods to 4 of the cylinders has any advantages?

I have that switch too, but unless I have to drive hours and hours after dark, my alt best is usually off completely.

It didn't come with cruise or A/C (although I would have pulled it if it did)
Its a V8, but it only gets 170HP (or it did new) and I pull some pretty big loads with it, so I wouldn't reduce it to 4 cylinders even if it would save fuel - my first priority is always its ability to do truck work

I wouldn't delete the alternator, altough I could consider some underdrive pulleys for it.
