I skip-shift my truck almost without thinking about it. The truck isn't the lightest thing out there, and the engine isn't very powerful, but the torque band is pretty healthy. 1st, 3rd, 5th is my usual pattern. Sometimes it's 1-2-4-5. I think about the accelerator pump every time I do it, too.
My Dad's old SAAB had a smooth underbelly - the only thing in the wind was the exhaust, and after that rusted away, not even that.
A 1970 model, it got 40mpg. I miss that car.
