When coolant gets too hot it degrades and is no longer a useful coolant.

I guess cause my vehicles large, both route through the radiator and the trans has an additional cooler as well
I figured most cars at least have the oil and/or trans oil routed through the radiator, but I guess not

Bump Any new developments here? I need to find a local Toyota dealer mechanic that may have some junk hot coolant storage tanks I can play with

Some thoughts:
1) there is a thread on tdiclub now about using a vaccumme thermos to hold heat (I know not same, but worth a look).
2) how about a big EGR cooler off say a semi? Should be reasonably priced.

I had up to 1100'F going out my exhaust.
Then I put on a turbo, picked up at least 3 mpg on the highway, 2 mpg driving around town and dropped EGT's by over 400'F.
Gas engines are a little harder to recover exhaust heat from.

off-the-shelf
Zombie thread lives again!
Saw this pic/article and had to post:
BorgWarner Exhaust Heat Recovery System for hybrids can improve fuel economy by up to 8.5%
Quote:
During engine cold starts, a valve controls the exhaust gas flow, routing it through a heat exchanger, where the thermal energy of the gas heats up the vehicle’s subsystem fluids. As a result, the engine warms up faster.

Is that the actual Prius unit ?
I keep considering a similar heat recovery setup for an off grid backup generator that would basically only be needed in the dead of winter.

I think it's a generic unit that BorgWarner developed to sell to other OEMs.

Since this has been revived, why not use a 12V block heater and/or 12V oil pan heater to heat up the fluids? They could be used manually or controlled automatically to come on with the car and turn off at a certain coolant temp (or from the tstat).

How would coolant water (and glycol) degrade? It doesn't break down like motor oil. I'm mean if you overheat it, it would eventually vaporize, but 98'C water is always going to be the same water.

Aqueous ethylene glycol decomposes into carbon monoxide and diatomic hydrogen (hydrogen gas) if it gets hot enough.
