Ford has been coming out with some pretty good cars lately. I expect the Fiesta to be on par with a Yaris/Fit. Maybe 1-2 mpg better (and hopefully more).

Lots of rave reviews in Europe. Ours is supposed to be part of the World car platform so it should be pretty close. We can only hope (or crush Ford with emails) that the diesel and ecoboost versions will make it here.

Ford has a fleet of US spec Fiestas driving around the US as a marketing thing. I don't know if they're posting MPG figures, but you might be able to dig something up here:

They weren't US-Spec. They were 2009 Fiesta Titanium Package, German version cars. I drove one (guy even had a scangaugeII!), and on hills (warm engine) with the 5-speed manual I got 40.5 (or 40.9, can't remember) MPG US.

The US version it looks like will get the same 1.6L Ti-VCT engine, but not the 5 speed manual - seems to be that it'll get the 6-speed PowerShift transmission; a dual-clutch auto controlled manual gearbox. I only ONCE saw postulation on the EPA ratings; and it was said that they're looking for 31/39.

They may get that, but that's not what they're rated. By that standard, the Fiesta is good for 55-70 MPG. They are looking into making a US-version of the ECONetic, with a 1.0L 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine - it'll probably be good in the hands of a hypermiler to near 100 MPG...

Are you are confusing EPA and foreign ratings (which are very different) and what drivers and ecodrivers actually get? If it is rated for 31/39 EPA, thats pretty good. The current Yaris is only rated at 29/36 and is quite capable of 50+ mpg.

Recently my wife is drivng a new fiesta. I checked the very first 1000 km. This gives a 34.4 MPG. I hope it gets better after some more running in of the engine. Driving distances are short so maybe long trips will also improve FE. The engine is the 1.4 L 120 HP with 5 speed manual transmission.
