Mom looking at new car, Jetta hybrid?

So, my mom currently has a 2011 Jetta TDI sportwagen. With the dieselgate stuff going on she is looking into options on what to do. I suggested she at least take a look at the Jetta hybrid. We will probably go take a look at a used one later this week. However, I really don't know too much about the Jetta hybrid. Anyone have any real info? Reliability, issues, etc? From what I've read its a pretty nice car, gets better mileage than the 2011 TDI, and it has more power. But, thats about where my info runs out.

She has a few options, so she is just looking into what she can do. She hasn't made up her mind if she will get rid of it or not. The money she can get for the car is pretty reasonable. I suggested selling it after hearing what they'll give her. Obviously if she sells it she'll need another car to replace it, thus the question and my post here.

I would avoid hybrids tbh unless it's a Prius. I can vouch for the 2016 civic, pretty damn good car.

Frank beat me to it.
In an overly complex MarkVI 1.8t the havoc caused by running over a stick or a small already dead and tenderized animal can cause I would never buy a VW hybrid. I am sure the 2001 turbo is stone age compared to their new hybrid.
You would need the equivalent of a college fund to pay for any out of warranty repairs.
Since the diesel gate thing it looks like the resale on the years effected has already taken a few thousand dollar hit.

The buy-out amounts on the Dieselgate VW's are REALLY generous, so I can understand why she'd be interested in taking that route instead of having it fixed, whatever that involves.

And it'd be interesting to try a Jetta hybrid...

But I'd steer clear of buying one. It's basically an unknown quantity engineering/reliability wise, exceedingly rare, and you'll have to get it serviced/repaired by a company that only half-heartedly wanted to sell it in the first place.

2014 U.S. VW hybrid sales (all - were there others beside the Jetta?):
1,952

2014 U.S. Toyota hybrid sales (all):
311,205

A nice used 3rd gen Prius makes sense as a high MPG wagon replacement with better cargo-hauling capabilities than a sedan, and most importantly: known above average reliability.

I also suggested a Prius before other things. She didn't seem too receptive.

Sounds like she'd be better off having hers fixed, then.
