Liability only doesn't help. You can still claim that he hit you, was completely at fault, and his insurance company should fix your car.

A written contract that can stand up in court is a little bit more complicated that just two people signing a sheet of paper.

Trust is hard to come by between strangers.

My ex got me to sign a contract for for the Subaru and it didn't stand up in court, but would you believe the judge felt my ex needed to have insurance?

Your uncle would probably have enjoyed driving some modern Scania-powered interstate coaches with adaptative cruise control and Opticruise AMT. I always remember the night a driver told me he could go between Porto Alegre and Florianópolis (more than 300 miles) and not even touching the pedals most of the time.

Yes, but you still need to steer, and I hear that you may need to brake!

And occasionally adjusting the cruise control, at the touch of a button

Most of the braking was done through engine-braking and engaging the parking brake.

I think he influenced me. I drove 36hp for two decades, the VW literature listed the top speed and cruising speed as the same.

Driving a slow car fast is better than driving a fast car slow, amirite?

That is a common refrain.

OK, it might not be the best for a Kombi, yet it would still be suitable to most normal driving conditions in a small car such as the Beetle. Once in a while I still see older folks driving Beetles normally, most often with the 1300 engine, yet it's not impossible to find some with the 1200 still roaming around.

Not to be argumentative, but those are original extremely low mile 1200 and 1300's?

We're talking 50+ years old.

And without popping the lid, or having it demonstrated by the proud owner, how would you know that? Really dim headlights? Or are there other clues? Seriously, I am interested in learning that.

Scratch that, you're in Brazil where all the funky VW parts come from.
