There is news again! After a few weeks of research I found my ideal rim / tire combination. I don't just buy something, I do my homework first ... Otherwise you will not buy a Skoda diesel!

Like I said before, I was looking for lightweight forged audi rims, like the first generation A2 and A3. It put's 12 lbs on the scale. There isn't a lighter 15" rim that fits my car, or yes there are, having to put down a 4-digit number for professional racing rims. But It turns out that even those Audi rims are quite rare and extremely expensive on the second hand market. People dare to ask $ 350 for a set of 20 years old. That just doesn't work for me. So I went looking for a set with signs of wear and totally worn tires so I could negotiate. And succeede. I have even been able to resell those worn tires .

Secondly, the tires. What was important to me of course is low rolling resistance. The most important thing, however, was a good grip in dry and wet conditions. Especially because I go to a more narrow tire, so less contact with the road. Ideally it would also have a slightly larger diameter so that the RPM's can be lowered at high speed. The largest (common) size with the narrowest tread for the 15" rim is 175/65. The tire with the best grip (A-rating) in that size is the Dunlop Sport Fastresponse. The score for RR is an average C, but in an independent Dutch tire test it scores as well as an A-rated tire. Also the weight of that one is quite low opposite other brands, being 15 lbs.
After some research I found (new) demo tires for half the price, including placement.

It has got an interesting asymmetrical tread design, rather different than that of LRR premium tires such as Conti EcoContact or Michelin Energy Saver.

Looks great! Your car will now generate fuel during drive

Is 175/65/15 an approved size for your car?
I don't want to use for my car a non approved size. My tires are 195/65/15 which is already small. There is even 185/70/15 that is in the list of approved dimensions, but you can only find tires for "collection" cars so no point.

That's a good one. Yes and no. The size is not stated in the car's manual, but the deviation does fall within the 3% tolerance used here. It fits under the car and it is legal.

Time for a comparison.

New(left)
175/65/15 84H
Dunlop Fastresponse
A rain / C consumption
Forged aluminum rim
27 lbs or 12,4 kg

Old (right)
195/55/15 85H
Bridgestone Turanza
B rain / C consumption
Standard alloy rims
32 lbs or 14,6 kg

Difference in height seems significant. All the more because the old one has already lost a lot of profile.

Difference in numbers (taking into account the reduced profile of the old tire)

Good stuff! You do this the way I do... lots of research for small gains... but lots of small gains become a big gain.

Hmmmmm. Don't have the big brakes. I cant run 15" rims, minimum for me is 17" because it damages the caliper under 16 1/2.

Hmm what should I say ... great minds thinks alike?

I hope this mod will make the biggest difference of them all. I'll have to test it. For this summer I will drive the old tires untill they're all used op.

Fun fact: I'm driving these Bridgestones for +65k miles now (or 105.000 km) without any problems. It made 57.3 million revolutions and still going strong.

It is also a really good looking wheel. Looks a lot like my 12 lb 15" BMW MINI rims, which have seven holes where yours have 10. Even the shape of the face and the holes--their compound curves--appears the same. So I would suggest you experiment with my blanking of those holes. Effectively it makes the wheel a fully covered wheel at almost no weight penalty.

I have often came across those Mini wheels in my search. They are more common. Unfortunately they don't fit my car, they only have 4 bolts.

Sealing those gaps will be easier than with the current rims. Just like cleaning! Looking forward to it!
