Carnot's equation refers to the difference in temperature of the working gasses. A hot air intake could affect potential that way, but the radiator's job is to keep the machinery from self-destruction. Until the thermostat opens, it does not affect block temperatures. Because the water pump is centrifugal, pumping losses go down as the thermostat closes, but not as much as air drag can be reduced with a variable intake.

heat engines work by having a hot place and a cold place. the difference between the two temperatures determins the efficiency. i think on a car the hot place is the engine and the cold place is the atmosphere? or is it the radiator temperature?
