No one is going to care how efficient the light year ones are if they (the hub motors) only last 20,000 miles at speeds above 20mph.

I have been asking for a source for long lasting on road hub motors since the start of this post.
I can't find them, no one else can either.
So you expect me to find a source for something that doesn't appear to exist?

We have some very bright people in here--and Phil.
He is exceptionally bright.
You really need me to point out that 400 MPGe will only be possible down a 5% grade?
Also, I see that emotion-based decision-making and the "I can't afford not to!" fallacy are alive and well.
I hope that everyone has a good day. I ordered the car parts that I was missing. Can anyone think of other parts I should try to pick up while in the Phoenix area?

Hm, in-wheel motors are commonly used in some industrial processes. Those should be reliable or they would not be used like that.
As for car use, it is a bit of a chicken-egg problem. There are no cars that use hub motors yet, so there's no large scale production, so the few motors produced have not yet been tested to iron out all the flaws.
So what are these flaws? Mainly water intrusion, which affects the Hall sensors.
If that gets fixed there's a bright future for hub motors though, with better and lighter magnets and magnet arranging patterns emerging, allowing for lighter and more compact motors, on top of the full per-wheel control and simplicity hub motors provide.

So you looked and found all the same stuff everyone else did.
Yes we know hub motors do very well in low speed industrial applications with smooth hard surfaces.
No one is saying hub motors don't work great in industrial applications. I use them where I work, they out last the machines they are on because I have never seen nor heard of one being changed.
We are not talking about a low speed industrial application any more when they are put on a car. We are talking about hitting a pot hole at 75 mph and driving on washboarded roads. Water, mud dirt.
It's "not the seals" that are the problem it's the weight of the hub motor trashing the bearings.
Seals aren't the problem, we have sealed bearing units on cars already easily lasting over 200,000 miles.

A pallet of used cheaper than dirt solar panels from santan solar.
Because you can't afford not to.

These lomg lasting, highway and pot hole capable hub motors are still looking like vaporware.
Hub motors are still stuck in walking speed applications unless replacing them like a consumable item is ok.

Actually hub motors supported by bearings on both sides seem to last pretty long although I don't know of any that have gone more than 10k miles.

Yeah an hub motors are freaking expensive and the install looks time consuming.
Not something you want to be replacing with about the same frequency as your tires.
