I was looking at oil less air compressors online and found this high pressure unit.

Makita USA - Tool Details - AC310H

400 psi working pressure and less than $700.

I would also imagine that certain refridgeration compressors would work well and could probably be found for free.

400psi in the application I am looking at would give me roughly 8 miles range, I am hoping for a minimum of 20 miles on CNG via at home compression.

The key is finding a used unit already intended for h2 or welding applications.

Is that 400psi with roughly 8 mile range ANG or CNG ?

Quoted from-

At 35 bar and 22 °C, ANG volumetric storage capacity is 5 times higher than CNG

Given the ANG tanks I can buy, I would say either, the ang tank would just be a little smaller. (aka there is only one company in the us selling ang tanks and they are only a little shy of a gallon)

Can't vouch for their reliability, and they likely won't come very cheap, but take a look at Holugt or Motor Jikov products.

I wouldn't go cheap on compressor and tanks for CNG - or any other pressurized, flammable gas for that matter.

They give 2900 to 3600 psi though - 200 to 250 bar - so the tanks must be able to hold that much pressure.

The tanks hold 3600PSI since I have a real stock CNG car lined up (but may not buy)

I am not interested in compressing the gas to 3600psi at home, I would prefer 1000psi or so due to speed, safety, reliability, cost and the potential of buying used.

All 3600psi pumps that would fit in my home are
1. expensive
2. Unreliable
3. not rebuildable.
4. High cost per gallon pumped.

Lower pressure units are more efficient per gallon pumped, generally rebuildable and much more reliable, sadly I don't know what brands are best for flammable materials.

AKA afterall, somebody is compressing the hydrogen, nitrogen, and natural gas welding tanks?

Here's another page from the same website that has the refueler with the tanks listed separately.

purchase

I haven't found any other commerical tanks available. However, I don't believe
it would be that difficult to DIY.
