Late to this party just wanted to suggest that using "any compressor" at all may not be safe, flammable fuel compressors are normally designed to be explosion proof, it's possible the heat of compression ALONE could trigger a detonation just like a diesel does, which is also why DIY compressors and rams are probably INSANE. That being said a compressor designed for flammable gasses should be taking this into account I would assume...

A scuba tank compressor is not explosion proof, it also is likely to cost far more.

A lot of CNG equipment is actually based on scuba gear.

"Based on", but when I suggested to someone in CNG forums about using a scuba compressor he said "dear god no" for the above reasons - there are modifications to make things explosion proof which they dont have compressing only air, so I shared it as a safety warning. Also if they cost more it's pointless...

That said i'd love to see talk of general duty flammable fuel compressors for up to 1000psi or something, I had a thread elsewhere asking on compressing woodgas that i'd like to try it in relation to.

interesting how a fellow would get nat gas to explode without an oxidizer.

i'm all ears.

One word -- leaks.

One brave guy drove the thing outside as it flamed away, it didn't explode though. In every situation I have seen a leak with a fire, it was scary but always stayed a fire, now of coarse if it got out of control you could still burn something down.

But again I should reiterate, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPRESSION SYSTEMS FOR VARIOUS FLAMMABLE GASES IN USE IN INDUSTRY. I would like to know what they are to locate them on the used market.

I have no plans on jerry rigging a scuba compressor to do CNG.

I would love to take one of the 500psi units for another popular flammable gas and use it at home however. A 20+ year lifespan and rebuildability is much more popular to me than getting a CNG system that dies every couple of years.
