The 97 is not complete and will be for parts for the 98. Then I will sell what is left. There might be someone interested in the block. For the 98, I would like to see what this engine might fit. I am told that I am dreaming if I think that this would be a bolt-on job. I probably am, but I would like to see what it would take to make a diesel Saturn or the like. If not, I plan to sell them both to someone who has more skills than I.

The Yanmar will go into a hovercraft and made the first WVO powered hovercraft in the world. Now that is dreaming

User Craig has a Saturn TDI which is also on the TDI Forums.

Although the engine (and car perhaps, I am 4000 miles away and we don't get Saturns here) are different he may have a head start on the Petrol to Diesel conversion.

I assume as the L-Series sold poorly (according to Wiki-b@@dy-pedia) that examples will be available for not so much money ? Vectra B's can be had for 2-300 GBP here.

Yes, a Saturn with a dead engine should be rather easy to buy. The L-models are a bit more pricey though. I probably will have to pay $1500 or more. The S models would be more in the range of the Vectras, but I think the chance of the engine fitting would be less.

Thanks for the tip! I will see if Craig has any advice.

It looks like engine number two is a X20DTH 2.0 DTI 16V

Now to figure out if it runs and which car it might fit in.

Get an L-series and a tape measure, let the fun begin

My bad - DTI of that age is 100hp not 120. BTW do they have gearboxes ? Diesel engine (redline 4,500 rpm) + petrol gearing = governer cutting in at under 70mph and not good FE.

Some euro spec Opel / Vauxhalls with this engine had 6-speeds with up to 30+mph / 1000 in top and with the torque available from the Di/DTI it still pulls quite well.

Would I be ok with a petrol/gas manual transmission?

Depends on the gearing.

My fabia runs 70 mph with about 2200 rpm showing in 6th. Anything over 25 mph/1000 may mean you are OK to get it going but it will be buzzy at speed and less than optimal FE.

We could probably locate a DTI gearbox or final drive but transport may be an issue to the states to make it uneconomic. Maybe you could mate it to a TDI 'box available locally with an adaptor plate ? That would also mean local sources for clutch parts which would be convenient.

I'm afraid I don't know whether the DTI transmission got its long legs from the final drive or the box itself, sorry.

Yeah. I am old.

I often travel to Europe, but I doubt they would let me check a transmission as baggage, unfortunately.
