New with a challenge

Hi everyone,

I'm really new to this. My wife drives a prius. I drive a lifted 87 jeep with 33 inch tires and a 2.5l engine. Im trying to get as much gas mileage as I can with this admittedly non-ideal vehicle, while not reducing its off road capabillities too much. Sounds like a fun challenge to me.

welcome.
Drive slower.
there may be a few tuning tricks....describe the engine.

The trick to better mpg is lowest possible rpms at cruise. SO either add a lower ending gear, smaller tires or lower speed.

I was in a similar situation yrs ago.

I had a 79 rx7 that I raced SCCA Showroom Stock SoloII. I kept 50 series times on the 14 stock alloy rims and kept my 66 mustang 6cylindar to putter around town in.

THe little rotary (in the rx7) had a 4 bbl carb that just SUCKKEDDD down the gas.
I figured I wasnt going to be able to change it enough to get decent mileage.

its a manual 2.5 liter with 33 inch tires and a pretty high lift. its my daily driver. I use it to cart my kids around town and for occaisional wheeling. I know its never going to get 50 mpg, but right now I would be ecstatic with 20. I have been reading over the 100 tips and read over the mods as well. I was wondering about a fastback, but they don't make them for my year of jeep. it would have to be something custom. as soon as I can borrow or steel an angle grinder I am going to do some weight reduction to my massive steel bumpers.

I would like to lower it a little and switch to 31 inch tires. is there anything like the scan gauge for pre 1996 vehicles available?

forgot, the only ac it has is to take the top off. I have removed the antenna, the stock jack, the spare wheel carrier, the horn, and the side mirrors already. the mirrors seemed to make the most difference, but if I go out of Oregon I have to add a drivers side mirror. also took out the center console and am planning to remove all the interior carpet and plastic trim when the weather gets warmer.

as far as gauges like the scangauge look into the
1) mpguino
2) vacuum gauge (this can help if used properly)

Im afraid that little bit of weight reduction will not help much...if youre driving around town leard to "pulse and glide" and conserve momentum...that will give you better results than any other mod you can do
