New ecodriving mobile phone application talk
Hi,
I am designing my own fuel saving driving instruction application for cars and big trucks (semis). First guestion is how much would you be willing to pay for it if it saved you 10% of per month or instant purhace? Development will cost around 15000€ for first version...

I refuse to pay for applications and software. Under any and all circumstances. Just me, though. When I buy a mobile phone, notebook, desktop, I expect it to be included regarding OS. After market, there is plenty of free stuff available. I only spend money on tangible things.
I don't mean to be a debby downer, just my personal view. I hope your software turns out well

I spent $5 or so on Torque. I had to provide my own phone and Bluetooth OBD plug.
Then I came here and found out about the Ultragauge. $80, and I didn't have to provide any hardware. That's a plus, because I don't want my phone to have to become part of the car- it's my phone. Knowing now that non-phone based solutions exist, I wouldn't even bother looking at something for my phone.
Besides, I use Waze when I'm driving.

I agree in getting pretty close to the best as possible, but I think this individual is focusing more on starting out from beginning to ecomod/hypermile.
I think it can be successful with the newer generation of people downloading "apps" and not knowing it is short for applications lol

this is true, an app that could condense the hundreds of pages of info on here to very usable tips and tricks and stuff would be great for beginners. how-to's also, so yeah an app that contained the very best and accurate and most important effective hypermiling and modding info would be worth i would say would be worth 10 dollars to me.

if the app gave me all the things my ScanGauge II does, as well as the ability to log this info (excell export, local graphs), log other perramiters: GPS route, elevation change, out door temp, user added items. then I would be interested. If it just was an info app then its not worth paying for. if its got all the above features, and works on Android and Ios, with a cable that costs under $40 I would be willing to pay for the app. free trial to test it and then I would pay $10-$18 for it.
I agree with some of the others, I do not pay for something thats not helping me do something better then what my dedicated tools do. logging is a tool I will pay for.
Side note, all SGII have a Ethernet plug for daisy chaining them together, it might be a better hook up option then the OBDY2 port.

I have torque also and i don't mind paying for something that works. I think you will have a hard time competing with torque. The truth is people trying to learn better techinque when driving are probably not wanting to use their phone for it. I only use my torque app sometimes and when doing tests.

Everything depends on the feature-set.
It has to be better than Torque or have a better feature set when it costs more.
The problem is, an iPhone without an OBD connection kit won't give good results.
But with it, it becomes more expensive ... and a lot less people will buy it.
The free Garmin stuff in their GPSes is rubbish for FE.
It derates the driver for driving below the limit, and for accelerating briskly near BSFC.
If it's that expensive to simply get it started, I wouldn't bother.
@ 5 Euro / 6.25 USD per download it'd take well over 3000 downloads just to break even.
This ain't no angry birds
Also, it's not guaranteed that people will get the claimed reduction in FC.

All above and much more. Starting point for first version is probably something like this:
DriveGain
That seemed best that I could find at the moment. So that + about 100 new funtions for various things that effect fuel consumtpion.
I know that people that have hypermiled a long time think that they don`t need more data to tell how to drive fuel efficient. Like Weather spotter said that altitude for instance is someting you cannot see from scangauge or ultragauge directly. There are other features also that you could use even you are already a hypermiler.
Biggest customers will be those semi or class 8 truckers of course and savings there will be big. This companys turnover last year was 1.3 million euros so there is market for a product like this at least in heavy trukking.
Helpten English
Software will be propably free test for some time and after that it will start to cost something per month.
