new to the forum

Not exactly new, but been a long time lurker. This forum says I need 10 posts to be able to send private messages.. This is number 6.

I am active on several other forums as well.

GTD Diesel, GTD VW Diesel - Index
Biodiesel infopop, Forums

I own a 1980 rabbit diesel. I am trying to get the highest mpg as possible, without adding a boat tail, because I pull a trailer behind the car moving stuff around very often.

My goal is to get into ~60mpg area.

I have a 1.5L diesel, I get 38mpg around town and highway. I got 32mpg pulling a trailer with a motorcycle on it at 65mph in 30*F

The 1.5L is pretty well worn out. By manufacturer specifications it is no longer a serviceable engine and needs replacement. mfg wear limit for compression 398psi or 40psi difference between cylinders.

I am at 310, 350, 370, 370.

I have a 1.9TD from a 95 jetta going in it this summer. Just making sure its bottom end is nice and tight so it can provide me some good service.

After 30 years and probably a good many miles, it's hardly surprising for one of the first faster-revving diesels.

The 55 kW / 75HP TD or a 90 HP TDi ?

The TDI would be overkill for the light Rabbit

Good luck with re-engining it !

That said, your trailer hitch would be a good mount point for a lightweight boat tail for the times you're not towing.

Adding a hitch to my Firefly is on the to do list for that reason (and also so I can occasionally tow a light trailer).
