New Guy Intro (2003 Jetta TDI)
Hi All,
Looking forward to learning what you do for more MPG. I have a 2003 Jetta TDI Diesel and have been experimenting for a few years on how to raise up the efficiency. Best I've done so far was 57.4 MPG. Trying to break the 60 mark even in the hills of western PA.

Welcome to the site Lane S. Your mileage is already pretty good so I assume your driving is fairly tweaked already. What mods have you done and what do you have planned?

Welcome, blow up the tires and put some pipe insulation in the grille openings to block the grille.

So far its just driving speed reduction, higher pressure in tires (90% of max), watching shift/rpms. I'm investigating the grill block and higher temp thermostat with Evans no water coolant (with 1st stage fan mod).
I'm getting ready for a 200K timing belt change and plan on replacing worn suspension, exhaust (2.5 or 3"), EGR, Turbo, and Intake cleaning for now. I'm sure you fellows will have some great suggestions.

Wow, that is a great goal. I drive through western PA a couple times in the summer & there are certainly a couple of doozy's. The worst so far is is I-40 East right past Uniontown. I have to throw my Corolla into 3rd gear with the pedal buried to maintain 45 MPH.
Already learning from reading here that is is better to lose a bit of MPH going up hills, but that is one climb that is tough to maintain speed.
