Maybe we should start a tuning business.
Instead of cat and DPF deletes we can bypass the kill switch!
We'll need to get some of VW's code so that the kill switch functions when you go through the yearly compliance check.
OR
No officer, I wasn't engine off coasting. My remote kill switch has been malfunctioning

We already have something that can stop a vehicle almost instantly. It's called the RPG7.
Just like I still have a cell phone that uses a removable battery for reasons.

More from the web.
Quote:
Applicable to vehicles manufactured after 2026 with exemptions given to cop cars and ambulances
Section 24205
mandates that the motor automatically shut off if left in idle after a certain period of time
then technology to prevent the movement of a vehicle when NOT in park setting....
the time for idling prior to shut off will be determined by the secretary of transportation and may vary on type of vehicle and type of fuel used by the motor
The maximum speed for engaging in a "kill switch" is also to be determined by the secretary of transportation
vehicles in which the seatbelt is unbuckled for the driver will shutdown or when the door is open
Also in the law is a requirement that the driving actions will be monitored and if the algorithm determines that the driver is impaired...the vehicle will shut down.

This technology is ripe for abuse.

Not news, it has been sporadically tested in LA county for perhaps the last 5 years. Kills Onstar equipped vehicles and maybe anything with a factory OTA capability or navigation. Kind of a design feature of the CAN bus system now used in cars to remote start and turn on the AC.
Recall the remote hijack of someone's wrangler? They stopped that access but didn't fix the hardware cause. How about the remote unlocking of VW's not using the key fob codes.

Yeah, it’s old news to a point.
The difference is that you won’t be able to avoid it because it’s Federal law now.

One example:
"The maximum speed for engaging in a "kill switch" is also to be determined by the secretary of transportation"
This wouldn't just monitor the driver's blink rate. The Tesla self-driving chip will infer intent.

It won't be implemented as written currently. First time a kid dies in a car of heat stroke because it turned off, they'll rethink things.
I take my seatbelt off all the time to take a coat off, for instance. It would be more dangerous to kill the engine than the few seconds of being unbelted. Plus, those switches go bad frequently enough to cause problems.
Anyhow, I'll circumvent it so this doesn't apply to me. Reminds me of bypassing the engine kill switch on the seat of the lawnmower. It would shut off whenever I layed backwards to duck under tree branches, which would stop the mower right under them trapping me. Just because I'm not in the seat doesn't mean I don't want to continue driving.

Yeah the seat switch is always the first thing to go.
Can't have bumps, and leaning over to pick something up killing the engine.
