I won't be fully excited (though I love the car) until I see the EPA ratings.

Bah, looks like a 2012 Yaris. The difference is night and day when comparing it to the concept.

A Yaris hybrid had been announced.

Yeah, its not nearly as edgy as the concept was. But, it'll still be the new halo car without going to an EV. They're estimating 60 mpg combined (the reason I commented on not being too excited before official ratings come out). The 1st gen Insight was only rated at 58 mpg highway (52 combined, 48 city). That means you get an updated car that gets better mileage (way better city mileage), has EV mode, is larger, costs about the same, and is safer than our previous halo car. Thats a good handful of improvements fellas.
What I do find disappointing is that the Cd is only .28 (according to some guy on priuschat). It needs a kamm back!

I'd put up a gen. 1 Insight against a Prius C on the highway any day.
An old Insight would still trounce it - at lean burn speeds (up to ~50 mph / 80 kph).
Still will be very interesting to see what the new Toyota can do though.

I'll agree the 1st gen Insight is more than likely going to remain king of the highway. I look at the numbers and just can't see the Prius C coming out ahead. Mainly, there is the aerodynamics factor. The Insight has an amazing low CdA of 5.00. Where as if we take the current dimensions (from cmpg), and use the subjective (but seems accurate) Cd I found for the Prius C of .28 we get a CdA of 6.20 which really isn't all that impressive. So, that means the Prius would have to make up that aero penalty in engine efficiency. According to the Insight BSFC chart, it bests the current 1.8L Prius engine by 5-10% (not sure if the BSFC map we have accounts for lean burn mode even). So, I don't see them getting ahead there either. At best they may break even.
This is probably a good example of how the EPA testing isn't all that accurate. Of course it'll be quite interesting to see real world numbers with these cars.

Costs about the same as what? I would trade my Cobalt in a heartbeat iff,
the price is not jacked way up, which is my main issue with the Prius.
Teens especially the lower ones are much more palatable then nearing and over $20K.
We will see if all the prius slipstream and driveing technique drive these beasts to 100mpg+
