I'm not a big Ford fan and will have to wait and see how the Aluminum body works out with insurance and all.

Is the 4WD option available to the Sprinter back there or just in Europe?

I have found an aftermarket 4x4 conversion company which does vans. I am looking for someone who cuts the van body down to a 4 seat pickup- rv hauler I saw a Sprinter in that exact configuration yesterday on I-10 but was going in the wrong direction
Thanks

If you need full-size, the new Dodge 1500 has an "Ecodiesel" option in a few more months. 3.0L turbo diesel:
2014 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel V6 | Diesel Engine Truck | RAM Trucks

You can also get the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same engine, EPA 30mpg hwy.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee | Eco Diesel Engine Capabilities | Jeep

The "ecodiesel" seems a bit too complicated for Chrysler to work properly. Their electronics and quality control leave way too much to be desired to trust them with a highly complicated diesel.

I'd try to get a 4 cyl Taco 4x4 manual trans.

I kinda like the GMC Canyon-Chevy Colorado, either with the V-6 gas or the Duramax diesel. They are the same size as my "Little" 03 Tundra with good towing capacity. I'm still looking for companies who convert vans to pick-up configuration, like 5th wheel haulers.

The sprinter can be ordered in that configuration (2wd though). Have a look around their site.

You might be able to stay with 2wd, if you beef up the stock components (air/electric locker, lift, tires) much like the TRD prerunners. With my truck, I've only locked in the front a few times, and even then, a winch would have gotten me through. This was on much tougher terrain than what you said.
