It's an historical artifact, like the Kraft durch Freude wagen.
The world has advanced to the point where VAG is allied with Tesla.
A modern interpretation would be pure electric and an unpainted stainless steel monocoque. Curved edges, simple curves.

Saying it doesn't make it so. The Delorean was a fiberglass body with a stainless steel wrap. It wasn't structural.

Very informative video, thanks for sharing!!
Think of how much better fuel economy it could've gotten if it kept closer to the original design, 2 passengers, ditch the AC, tiny diesel or gasoline motor with no battery/hybrid system, or maybe just a tiny 0.5kw hybrid assist battery. Lighter weight, lower CDA; in order to make it more marketable they ended up with a vehicle not that much more efficient than a G1 Insight, and costing many times more.

XL1 top speed
The July, 2013, CAR and DRIVER reported that, with the governor defeated, the XL1 would do 124-mph, according to VW.
The 2015 XL1 derivative , the XL Sport concept, Cd 0.26, 197-hp,and pop-up rear spoiler was rated at 168-mph.

I'd love to see or try one of these cars. Same goes for the EV1 (trying would be more difficult).
The Metro XFi is also on the list - never sold in Canada, so I've never laid eyes on one.

Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.
I just watched. I liked that they mentioned the NILS, single-seaters get even less love that the tandem two-seater.
It seems like the 1st gen Insight is as close as most will get to the XL1. But the new CEO for Meyers Manx LLC is the guy that designed the New Beetle, so there may be some interesting VW kit cars on the way.

I've always had very mixed feelings about XL1.
On one hand, kudos for actually producing it.
On the other hand, the actual fuel consumption claim was product of marketing rather than engineering and I hate that.
Also, what really sets me off is how inferior XL1 is to L1. L1 was reasonably practical car yet much more efficient than XL1. But farther from what an average buyer considers a car.
If someone made a L1-like car at a reasonable price point I would rush to buy one.
Or, better, if someone made an ecomobile-like vehicle at a reasonable price point.

I'm pretty sure I have two of what you're talking about, sitting in my driveway.
