Talking Hello from TN, 2001 Insight

I am real excited to be here. I recently sold my Crown Vic Interceptor and Nija to purchase a 2001 one owner with 130,000 miles, new battery and 62mpg average. I have made two round trips, first from maryville to Dayton, MPG 62. The next maryville TN to Panama TN, MPG 77.3. Since then I have found the bottom engine compartment covers were missing which have been ordered. I also purchased some new Bridgestone original spec tires. Honda no longer has them in stock. Found them on Tire Rack and had them shipped to honda dealer for instillation. When I arrived home, I changed pressure from 32? to 40 lbs. Seem to roll ok. Reading a lot about hyper milling, hope to find meetings and new friends, there is a lot for me to learn. My daughter and I are loving "Baby Car", other auto is my wife's Fir automatic which makes 40 mpg at a continuous 55 mph.

Glad to see another happy Insight owner around here!

Which size did you order the Potenza on tire rack? 165/65R14? If not they are not the right size.

Can you tell me where you found the underbody covers?

From your description I am sure you have a stick shift, am I right?

My Insight has 126k mi and the 144v battery was changed in 2007 by Honda.

Are you interested in ecomodding or just plain hypermiling?

Denis

Talking 2001 insight Reply from tpotts

Thanks for the welcomes, the potenza tires are 165/65/r14 from tire rack. My car is missing several small bottom covers around the engine, which I have ordered. I am interested in all aspects of mods, and am not anywhere near proficient or knowledgeable about hypermilling . I started getting interested through driving an old CRX and several hondas. I became really interested after seeing what was being done on EcoModder.com. It seems to me to offer a new fun hobby that I can engage in and become even more environmental friendly. It certainly be safer than riding a Ninja at 71 years old, having started on bikes many years ago when there well no cell phones and far less cars, it was time to move on to something new. I would like modify the car by removing the outside mirrors, putting on a full size bottom cover, and building a tail. All of these things I know very little about. I am also retired which means projects will go slow under small budgets. I hope that I have addressed the questions asked by new friends. It is neat to meet EcoModders young and old. I hope I can contribute something and learn a lot ,best Tom.

That's pronounced "Murrv'l"

...or "Merrv'l."

I did what you did: I got a thrifty ride to displace something thirstier. Except now the kids drive the Subaru.

I gotta say though, I think I would miss the prowling menace the Interceptor wields on the road. Just tooling down the highway, people move aside for you. It doesn't need lights and a B&W paint job. Just being a CV is enough.

That will go away though, as more original CVs age out and are replaced with something else.

Where'd you get yours? Those original Insights are thin on the ground in E TN, I looked around and saw none when I was shopping.

2001 insight and crownvic

The insight and the crownvic were both found on craigslist. The insight came from around Durham, NC. It was a one owner. I have had several Interceptors in my life. For what they are, a rather large good handling car with a bit of power (130mph), they are hard to beat. At best I would get 16 mpg to 26 mpg. Cab drivers get hundreds of thousands of miles out of them. They do induce fear on the interstate (HA) nothing like a huge white car with a black grill!

The 2001 insight is "from the future" and my all time favorite!

Thanks for the Welcome. Best Tom

Hi, Tom - welcome to the forum!

I did get your private message about the "wildlife habitat" I constructed on the back of my Insight...

http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...uft-25223.html

Sorry I misled with the "CAD" joke ... cardboard-aided design, no computer design files to share. I now realize I should have taken measurements while building this, because I've been contacted by a number of Insight owners who would like to reproduce it in a more durable material (coroplast or foam sheet, etc.).

Best I can suggest is contact EcoModder member Minispeed . He bought the car from me and took the tail as well. If/when he disassembles it, he may be able to offer some useful info.

I miss the car - it was a real treat to drive. Learning how best to use its design for maximum economy was a fun challenge.

Darin
