Observing a 3 mpg+ gain (~6% improvement) with Energy Saver A/S tires

Thanks for the follow up F8L. I will look into the defenders. I am also considering using a 15 inch wheel. I have some 9.5 lb 15x7 enkei RPF1 I could toss on some 185/65 15 Michelin Energy Saver A/S. Is using the energy saver that much better over the defender?

If you are upsizing to a 15" and trying to decide between those two tires then yes, I believe the ESAS is a better choice in terms of cost/mile and high mpg numbers. The following assumes a 3mpg gain with the ESAS and that each tires lasts for it's warrantied tread life of 65,000 and 90,000 miles.

Energy Saver A/S
Set of 4=$374
65,000 / 45mpg = 1,444ga * $3.60/ga = ($5,200 + $374) / 65,000 = $0.857 cents/mile

Defender
Set of 4=$394
90,000 / 42mpg = 2,143ga * $3.60/ga = ($7,714 + $394) / 90,000 = $0.900 cents/mile

Yokohama AVID Ascend (T)
Set of 4=$384
85,000 / 42mpg = 2,023ga * $3.60/ga = ($7,285 + $384) / 85,000 = $0.902 cents/mile

FWIW the test that compares the Ascend and Defender should be coming put any day now. I have a feeling the Ascend will be slightly better in mpg, worse in noise/comfort but better in wet traction. Or is that dry traction? Hmm I liked the Ascends for handling and traction but not as much as the Energy Saver A/S for mpg.
