Oh dear...
Well I lost my job today, contract where I was working ran out today, so I only have 2 days a week now. Has anyone here been in/currently active law enforcement? I have been thinking about joining CHP, sheriff or a prison guard, and am wondering what kind of physical activity is evolved and if I could handle it with my bad neck.

Balto, I am very sorry, I hope that you are able to find something soon.
I remember a thread where jails and guards were briefly discussed, it may have been one of my locked ones. My Sergeant is or was a prison guard and I know two more guards in my Guard unit--one was upset because he missed his day job for drill, where he was paid much worse.
All that I can say is that it is relatively good pay, but like most jobs, employees do not feel they are paid what they are worth. I remember a former guard writing that many of his coworkers were guards because their anger issues prevented them from being police like they desired.
For anyone that does not know, CHP is California Highway Patrol. When I was a kid, we lived in California, and watched a show called CHiPs.
Good luck!

Balto,
Are you looking to be John, or Ponch?
I know some police officers and prison guards, and both can be a pretty rough job. Be prepared for culture shock if you go down that path.

Tbh I was happy with 9$ an hour. I didn't feel like I was getting underpaid - shrugs -. I was just happy to have a job.

Yea I know it's quite different. I have a friend who is the head of the swat at the Adelanto prison, it's the local max security iirc. I was going to follow up with him this coming week, but I was just looking for tips before I did.

My father was turned away because he wasn't a big enough a-hole, if you want to be a cop you have to have a burning hatred in your soul and deep amounts of self control.
Not an easy job by any stretch, sort of like being a social worker.

I guess both of those careers put you in physically dangerous positions. If someone is a jerk to me, I only cater to their egos if they outrank me, but I am not rude to anyone. I am most likely to ignore them, which people insist is rude, but if you are insulting me and cursing at me, I am not worried about pleasing you, unless you outrank me.

Wow, that explains a lot about my run-ins with LEO.
Sorry about your job loss Balto. Here's a link that may help you do some research and maybe some more alternatives. Good luck!

Excellent link...
I have been telling people for years that a 4yr. degree is not needed for a good paying job.
