They are all cool in their own right, but I liked BC's the best. Looks like he lopped the nose and cockpit off a jet fighter

Having passengers lined up instead of side by side seems to make so much more sense to me. Lower cd, easier to park (motorcycle style) you could even lane split in heavy traffic (in CA at least).
Even the automotive x-prize makes it a requirement that the passengers be side-by-side. I just don't see the advantage.

I realize the contest is over, but I'd like to see a smart which is half the width and twice the length.

So apparently now there's a smart fortwo design contest.

Prizes total 5,000 Euros "AND a lot of publicity and exposure." (!! Thanks, I'd rather the cash. )

Deadline is Feb 23, 2010.

Not sure if these super aero vehicles qualify, but here's the main web site for more info if anyone wants to dig deeper:

Thumbs up

sorry for the awakening of a dormant topic but I was simply blown away by the "winner" entries for the Smart Design contest MetroMPG just mentioned I mean I understand it's an exercise of design but honestly none of the winning designs look too inspiring to me

"botsapper", you should've definitely entered this thing..

The contest was more for frou-frou graphic artists than 'car' design. The 'Smartera' would not have kept intact the Smart brand.

...besides, still waiting for the prize of this contest.

I remember reading an investigation of how to improve aerodynamics in short cars. And the exemple was a Smart, but I did not find the report now. They assessed that covereing the rear wheels was worse than keeping clear and some other thing in a wind tunnel.
I'm sorry because I can't help more
