Wow! I could tell they looked similar just from seeing them rolling around out here, but I hadn't seen them side-by-side yet. And both the P90D and the Panamera get to 60mph in about 3.5 seconds. But the Model S seats five & has more cargo space. With zero tailpipe emissions.

I think it's more of a marketing gimmick, though a working one.

Many articles about 200+ mph cars discuss the how the carmaker addressed stability and downforce at speed.
Ferrari or Lamborghini (sorry, don't have that in front of me) wrote that rather than add aerodynamic excrescences, they strove to avoid any feature of the cars body which would introduce high-speed instability in the first place.
These stability issues, plus cooling, end up creating shapes whose Cds typically exceed those of the best pickup trucks.
I'd never use a supercar as a template for fuel economy improvements.

Is that their term?

Using a wind tunnel and computer projection, Pininfarina produced a body that generated sufficient downforce without excessive drag, while avoiding the aerodynamic excrescences that adorn so many out-and-out competition cars. Nevertheless, there was no mistaking the pugnaciously styled F40's antecedents as one climbed inside, the body-contoured seats, absence of carpeting and trim, and sliding Plexiglas windows only serving to reinforce its image as a thinly disguised race-car.

"aerodynamic excrescences"
I searched for that and found the article I linked about the Ferrari.
