Actually it seems like he was stating that a Diesel is a better option than using the Prius' internal-combustion engine alone.

I don't know all the nitty gritty details of each engine (mounts/transmission bolt pattern, etc.), but if you yanked the 1NZ-FE engine out of an Echo, and installed the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, accessory brackets, etc. from it onto a 1NZ-FXE engine from a Prius and used the stock Echo harness and ECU, it will probably work. Probably. Maybe.
And if it does work, there will definitely be an efficiency advantage - 13.0:1 vs 10.5:1 to be exact. 25% less power, but who cares about that.

I just have another idea for Prius... To buy a Prius strip it off from any weight you can get rid off and put a small powerfull and very efficient diesel engine like 1.4 or 1.2 TDi
With Prius aero and lightened body that should give amazing FE numbers.
I have to think of that more Maybe a new project? (Wife will kill me )

Unless you swap in a tranny, the power splitter is going to require the die-sel egine to turn 5 grand to achieve highway speeds.

I was thinking of swapping whole drivetrain with gearbox not just plug in diesel engine to Prius power splitter. So that wouldn't be a hybrid anymore. I'm thinking of Prius body with fuel efficient diesel drivetrain.

Oh, well the hybrids are rather hogs with the battery pack and drivetrain removed. I think there is like a 20 lb difference between the weight of my insight and my sidekick. Not sure the dieselengine vs the synergy drive would produce the same mpg, aero is just one aspect of the prius or insight design to save fuel. You may be better for mpg to go with a geo or first gen insight.

I like Insight but those are very rare here in Poland. TBH I haven't seen one on the street yet.

Its my assumption that the other countries have plenty of eco cars and other vehicles. Its the US who still drives around vehicles the size, shape and weight and mpg of the tanks our auto manufactures use to make for the world wars.

I've already considered to do a similar project. Altough I'm often labeled as a "Prius-hater" I don't really hate it so much. BTW maybe the drivetrain out of some Peugeot or Citroën with an e-HDi engine would be perfect
