Two different (Chrysler?) engineers apparently downshifted instead of upshifting... The transmission is sequential, so they got mixed up?

Both the two Chrysler test engineers unnecessarily redlined the engines when getting up to 70ph for the neutral coastdown and then they downshifted seriously overeving and blowing the engines. Chrysler paddle shifters work in the opposite direction of the edison2, racecar, bmw and motorcyle style shifters. Its believed they panicked when the red light came on, which was just telling them they hit the redline limiter. I don't know if the edison2 engine computer was designed cut the fuel with a bad shift but at those rpms it might have been damaged to quickly either way. Their 250cc engines were heavily modified with custom parts so they couldnt fix them in time to go to Argonne national labs.

Wow, I'd feel terrible if I were one of those test engineers right now.

What a shame, and a really unfortunate circumstance for the Edison team.

Apparently, the testing that Edison2 had done at Roush will be used instead of the Argonne Labs, since the engines are no longer functioning.
It should be noted that a similar fate befell the tandem car's engine at Michigan, and that is the reason that car was eliminated.

they could actually use a couple ounces of downshift-lockout-if-the-speed-is-too-high it sounds like.

That, and putting the transmission paddles the right way around.

I believe the rules state that contestants should configure things so they're easy to understand and operate for the non-team drivers, making them automatic if possible.

I wonder how many times they've heard that refrain in the last few weeks.

Doubt you can get Chrysler to do that!
