Well, now you will get to do a " cavity test " of sorts with the open end of your tail .

By " cavity test " I was referring to a cavity used in tests such as this one : http://wwwm.coventry.ac.uk/researchn...e%20Plates.pdf
Note the open end which is hollow.
I found the study on slotted cavities interesting as well.
( And yes, with a name like "anal probe" i can see the humor in a "cavity" test )

Very interesting. So I could get a sheet or two of clear plastic to do something about 200mm long and probably see almost 1mpg?
Edit: I'm having trouble deciphering this graph... what do the %'s on the bottom mean? Apparently the cut out base plate could net me 6% or about 1.3mpg.
Both of those are pretty lame as far as value for the time invested, even if I found some junk materials for free.
I need to make a good boat tail. Can't wait for summer.

If you were to add a baseplate, you might as well just fill in the sides and create a true tail.
Do you plan to try and radius the corners on the extension that you have now ? Look like it could create some mean vortexes around those sharp edges !

If I can't find some better structure material in the next couple days I'm going to ABA test it this weekend and leave it off. The permanent/long term version will have radii and probably relocated tail lights and license plate. Too much on the table right now to be messing around in the garage...

I'm thinking the main thing that is going to get you pulled over are those sharp steel pieces you have sticking out . It's also a hazard to people walking around the car. Perhaps wrap the ends in something eh ?

Just put a "red flag" on them, anything red/orange colored and I don't think anyone can yell about it.
