41 mpg isn't bad, I'm getting 52 mpg so far this tank at 65 mph highway in the sc1 without much drafting. I guess those aliens like to hide out on those remote logging roads, good retrieval.

I had a fuel leak in 2011 in my minivan. It cost about 15-20% of fuel usage. Perhaps you are burning less than you think.

That would be pretty cool. I wonder how much could leak out in those 9 hours of driving.

And Friday night, marshalling- this was so damn fun. This was one of almost 30 cars that went by making music like this. All in all we worked four stages on Friday and spectated one on Saturday (missed a couple due to off-roading crap).

My brother left a car with a leaking tank parked at the curb in front of my house (in the 70s) and went to South America. Soon there was a puddle of gas at the curb. Not much will stop leaking gas, definitely not duct tape, not bubble gum.

What does work? Rub a potato on it.

There's plenty of sealants that will work. The trick is to drain the tank and make sure the area that you're applying the sealant to is clean and dry.

Aircraft grade fuel tank sealant.

I have some gas tank sealant I bought last year. Will probably use that...

...and look for Geo's on Craigslist.

I expect a belly pan would help prevent rust (and bits like that eventually falling off the car) but more especially if the belly pan were added earlier in the car's life.

Any mistakes you think you might have made on your belly pan the rest of us might do well to avoid?

Yeah, the rust ship has sailed. I'm somewhat afraid of how much the frame is rotting.

Things to improve upon:

-Make SURE the structure is super duper strong as well as supported somewhere in the middle. Not "strong enough", but rock solid. I used two thin C-channel aluminum bars as the main support structure and it wasn't enough. I'd like to use ABS plastic next time for the skin.

-Seal it up on the sides. If you don't know how you're going to do this, don't do it at all yet.

-Make provisions for wheel strakes, boat tail attachment (got that one) and whatever other additions you'd like to make. This means reinforcing it or building it heavier in critical areas.

-Any parts that you'll regularly take off- under the oil drain plug and oil filter, for instance- should be attached using clips, hinges or a combination. Zip tying it up every 6 months is not fun.

-Don't off-road it (oops). Anything you build, short of plate steel, will be of no consequence to a rock.
