Nooooo no fancy audio system haha, just stock.

What I am thinking about is probably adding a small capacitor or rechargable battery inline with the power wire to the radio so that even if the power from the battery cuts out the radio still has enough electricity to run for that 1 second that it takes for the car to start. (again, its not long but it gets annoying, especially for other passangers, they dont like the radio cutting off at every stop light hahaha).

They actually make very large capacitors (in excess of a Farad) just for surge protection in car A/V equipment.

I have bypassed the key in 3 or 4 beaters. a couple toggle switches for the ACC and On positions and a push button. I have found the key switch is the culprit in the radio and accessery shut off. When the key switch is in the start position only the On and Start posts get power. Bypassing the key switch will usualy mean that pushing a button for start will just activate the starter, without interupting the power to the fuse block (and radio)

Yea, I'm interested in doing this on my beetle. It just seems like the right thing to do. I'm curious, though. It seems like my steering column tightens up in my beetle, but in my wife's jetta it remains the same. What can be done for this?
