This was so the trans could be shifted as a five speed -- 1, 2, 2+OD, 3, 3+OD.

Cross-shifting from 2+OD to 3 might not be the easiest job.

A button in the gear knob, as it's more usual in medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks with dual-speed differentials, is still more practical than the twin-stick setup.
