Chevy Volt’s Coefficient of Drag is 0.28, Beats Prius and Insight

Quote:
“The Prius came in at .30,” said Boniface. “That was a number that was verified in our tunnel, in Chrysler’s tunnel, and in Ford’s tunnel.”
“The Insight was 0.32, and the Volt was .28,” he said.
“I’d like to test the Volt in the same tunnel where Toyota got their 0.25 value,” he teased.

Smoke visualization
( Lloyd Fox/Baltimore Sun / January 26, 2012 )
Alex Ratushny a student and co-op at the wind tunnel, runs the smoke visualization test on the G2. The G2, a new plug-in electric hybrid automobile designed by Rockville-based Genovation Cars Inc. will be tested at the University of Maryland's Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel. Designed to be one of the most aerodynamic cars on the market, the G2 will be tested under varying wind and weight conditions to simulate real driving.

Smoke trails in windtunnels are only for looks and do not serve much for real visuals. The problem with smoke trails is that the only way you can see them is when the airflow is low. If the airflow is higher/normal, the smoke would distribute very quickly.

That's why florescent green smoke is best.

Look at that 1/43rd scale model VW with the reverse rake of a stock VW. If you hold a straight edge up to the screen, level up to the centers of the hubcaps and slide it straight up, you'll see that the streamlines over the top of the roof descend below that height only as they reach the vicinity of the back bumper.

I like bubbles

I went looking for a picture with florescent green smoke bubbles underwater, but what I found instead was a trove of ontopic stuff posted by aerohead in 2009!

I get annoyed when so much focus is on the front of the car in wind tunnel videos and images. While smooth flow from the front is important, what happens after detachment behind the car is where it really counts.

I think the dust streaming off the back of the front wheel on ol' #3 is great.

The streams onto the front are photogenic and people are too [insert lame excuse here]. I think if the camera is fixed relative to the vehicle and the smoke was videoed for a while, that could be blurred into a low-contrast composite. Then that could be run though a high contrast filter. I think structures in the wake would pop right out. A little 'bullet-time' magic and you could have a fly-around of the vehicles wake. Sort of an analog faux-CFD animated GIF.

That is a great find, I looked for something like that before I started this thread but somehow it did not turn up.

That's why I don't mind poking around in Google Images and elsewhere—the stuff you find incidentally. This is closer, but still not the one I was looking for:

Also, in the sidebar for that one:
