I taught at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and it's always been my plan to refuse a request for a search, as a matter of principle. That said, I don't do drugs or have anything to hide, and I've never been asked. I'm not sure what I'll do if asked.

LEOs know when they ask, that they have no right to expect you to waive your Fourth Amendment rights. If you consent to a search, you're giving them a freebie.

The exception, as stated above, is exigency. If they have a report that someone fitting my description and driving a car like mine just committed a murder or armed robbery, they can search my car without my permission.

Another exception is if they see contraband in plain view in your car. That gives them probable cause to suspect you of committing a crime, and gives them the right to search your car w/o your permission.

You also have the right to not incriminate yourself, i.e. answering questions such as: do you know how fast you were going? or why do you think I pulled you over?

I don't mess with them. Got stopped on I95 south going 80+ by a Va State Trooper at night. Only reason I went that fast was the jerk who passed me on the right and pulled over 2 car lengths in front of me. I was tail end charlie on a group of traffic, one of my favorite places.

Blue flashing lights, pulled over, trooper comes to the window, ask for license etc. I looked him in the face and told him I had to reach down into the center console and get the wallet, did so with two fingers and handed it to him without taking anything apart.
Told him I wasnt worried about him checking anything, the wife was in the car with me.

I did mention the guy that pulled over in front of me and how stupid it was to pull over soo close, probably the guy saw him and wanted to get out of his way , who knows.
I could not believe it when he came back and gave me a warning. 80 is reckless in VA.
He did follow me for 45 miles and then finally passed me and waved.

regards
Mech

25 in a 20, really??? Were there any kids present? I got pulled over today for talking on my cell phone (too poor ATM to buy a good bluetooth), I was also doing 35 in a 25 (downhill with the engine off) but he didn't have his gun on and didn't notice my speed. Let me off with a warning.

last year got pulled over on the way to galveston, it was my wifes birthday. we left at little rock at 4 am i took 2 caffeine pills drank some coffee and off we stopped in texarkana got gas and a downed a huge monster energy drink. i was on go. we passed through linden texas there was a corner to the left speedlimit 65 after the corner it drops to 45 you cant see the sign till its too late. local yocal pulled me over. asked where you going in such a hurry. i explained i didnt see the sign. ask me why my hands where shaking i told him about the coffee and energy drink. ask me is there anything in the car i should now about. ( yes sir) what would that be. i handed him my conceal carry license he asks where is it at. i tell him he orders me out and does a pat down. im like this is going bad. my wife gets out sits down on the curb. we searches the car cant find anythink. he couldnt figure out how to open the trunk i had to show him push the button on the door. then he goes to the back of his car and gets a book out and goes through it for 20 minutes trying to find something to arrest me for. he finally gives me a ticket and we are on the way. ah@le cops. sorry about your bad luck

I always tell them "Yes I DO know how fast I was going. Do you know how fast I was going?" They never can tell me ( I don't speed anyhow) and can't write me a ticket for an "imaginary" 5mph over. When they ask "Why do you think I pulled you over?" I never say "I don't know. Why did you?" I just simply ask "Why DID you pull me over?" Spin their questions around on them and make them tell you "why" or "how fast".
