the auto trans is a ALL OUT mpg killer, its a non O\D, non lock up trans....
add in the 4 cylinder engine 4 door and A\C and it will be very hard to brake the 40 mpg mark even with "very aggressive" gas saving driving.
going with the flow of traffic 30/34 is common for it..

theres one model the, "geo metro XFI"
the cam shaft out of it is the most valuable mpg item...
but over all the XFI was made with one purpose and thats max mpg...

the XFI was a USA only model 1990/1994 and barely 10% of them "or less" where XFI if i remember right..as i see your in Canada
non XFI model rating...
Compare Old and New MPG Estimates
XFI rating
Compare Old and New MPG Estimates

yes with work all the XFI hard parts 2 ring pistons, computer, trans are swappable, to a standard 1.0L engine. id say the computer will net the least gane.
when new theres about a 10hp difference in the two engines.
do to the cam reducing air flow in and out of the engine and the 2 ring pistons that have reduced drag. the XFI computer has more or less no change in the HP.

some good info on the cam swap...

Canada got the hot rod version of the 1.0L 3 cylinder with a turbo charger. i think it was the pontiac version up there, but as far as the XFI i think imported ones are all you will find.
