I'm confident I haven't spent that much at a dealership in my entire life, let alone per year. Sounds like a bogus stat to make their warranty seem like a good deal. Caveat Emptor.

I think this is a gross generalization. I've had several "US branded" trucks that required little to no maintenance and were generally quite reliable. Meanwhile, my Honda is costing me an arm and a leg in maintenance (just almost nothing spent at dealerships).

One reason I hardly ever buy cars that haven't reached 100K miles :-)

Seriously, oil (even the expensive 0W20 synthetic for the Insight) & filter runs maybe $20 every 7500 miles...

That is pretty much my attitude, except it is more "Why should I pay someone else to mess up my car?!" I have had friends harass me over it, but I have had plenty of bad experiences at different shops.

I will purchase oil and filter from whoever has the best deal on it and then see somewhere offering to change it for little more. I know that they are going to tell me that things are wrong and want me to pay extra for platinum sparkles in my oil or whatever, but how much does an oil change actually cost, compared to the advertised price?

I just wish that I would purchase a car closer to having the timing belt replaced than me needing to have it done.

Experience the glory of the timing chain!

I do all the repairs that I'm capable of doing. I would rather spend a bit on new tools (who wouldn't?) than put it towards labor. With the internet and some basic tools, you can do quite a bit.

*not including tires

New winters this year, damned expensive rubber and steel. Summer's are next to be replaced.

But through 125000kms, the truck has been trouble free. Never been back to the dealer, other than to buy oil/transmission filters. I can see spending $800 on oil and filters (engine, trans, transfer case, front/rear diffs) with labour, not in parts alone though.

Don't neglect this bit:

and body shop repairs
A simple repaint of a bumper can cost a few to several hundred dollars, let alone a more complex repair.
