It runs at 600 rpm, and the sound is actually soothing -- like a distant steam locomotive A quarter wave would be what... 120 feet in air? No idea in exhaust gas....
We had a similar 2 cylinder Lister in my early years growing up on a farm.
The exhaust muffler was a drum full of screened (6 to 12 mm IIRC) gravel from the 'Diggings' on the farm. (for diamonds by various diggers)

I remember the soothing doef-doef, doef-doef, with fondness.

Yes a resonator pipe would be way too long on those!

Impractical to run exhaust pipe underwater. This set up on deck, when in use charging, and had to be stowed in a seaway. Also back pressure wouldn't recommend it, etc, etc.
Now that's where Resonators start making sense.

Our one was used when camping and fishing etc down by the river.
It stood in a hollow/thicket a good distance away and had a piece of rubber? hose that exhausted into the river, about half a foot bellow the waterline IIRC.

There was also some sort of non stock intake filter/silencer contraption that got filled with a bit of old engine oil occasionally.
It probably came off of an old car from the the 40s or something.

(No resonators of any sort that I was aware of)

BTW it is hooked to a junk car radiator tilted at an angle high up in my shop adjacent. It heats the shop when the generator is used. Coolant flows hydronically by convection. Air also (no fan needed) through the angled radiator.
I spoke about the simple water heater using the same Lister on the farm here:

I guess nowadays those horizontal-single Yanmar and its countless Chinese copies may outnumber Listeroids by a far margin...
