...on our Cruze LTZ, it seems to be simple:

MPG = MPH ÷ GPH

...because the totalized-gallons value is where the "error" seems to lie, because the totalized-miles value always coincide with the TRIP#1 (and #2) numbers.

Yes, but... with the SG calibration feature you can make it very close to accurate. Mine has given less than 1/2 gallon TOTAL error over the last 2 years.

Yes (good question). Each gizmo has it's benefits and detractions. The SG is plug-and-play for any 1996 or newer car. The MPGuino requires splicing into wiring and has it's own calibration process, but it is more accurate and can work on all fuel-injected cars.
