Just a quick warning for those who like to brake-test tailgaters. A friend of mine has just done this and the TG-er failed the test. Result was, thankfully, only bent metal and no injuries. Aparently the other driver spotted the top of his (empty) child seat in the back afterwards and nearly fainted.
The police were called but were busy with other things so they didn't come. My friend and the other driver exchanged insurance details but when my friend went to sort out his claim he found out the other driver didn't have valid insurance, and the details he gave were false and the police don't have a current address for the vehicle registration number as the number has been cloned (copied, usually to allow the driver of the copy vehicle to go past speed cameras and so on).
They have recorded it as a crime but the car is already known to ANPR (auto number plate recog) but hasn't been spotted in over 18 months by any cameras.
In simple terms he is screwed and his insurance will bear the cost, he loses his excess and (maybe - although he is arguing it) his no claims bonus / discount as this is supposed to be 'protected'.
If you do get tailgated my preferred option is to slow down. This has 2 main benefits - firstly you get some escape space in front in case the person behind is not paying attention, and secondly it pi$$es them off even more. My dad (policeman) used to do this all the time as it was safer.
Just thought I would share.
