What I recall most from my physics classes is that SPEED (V) wasn't the problem, but rather the suddeness of change-in-velocity (dV/dt), i.e.: the STOPPING function (wink,wink)...how fast the "...rock-&-hard place..." meet!

Obviously, speed doesn't kill.

Speed differential does.

The problem is when v is high enough, the differential with stationary objects like bridge pylons, dividers, curbs, pedestrians (given the difference, walking speed makes no difference at all) and stalled cars becomes unacceptably high.

-

People don't drive at a speed they consider safe. They drive at a speed they consider comfortable. Unfortunately, modern cars are so quiet and composed at speed that 100-120 mph is perfectly comfortable in most cars, no matter how suitable those speeds are to the current road conditions.

-

Which means, to bring down speeds and conserve oil, everyone should be driving stripped out, roofless Miatas. Without helmets or goggles.

With higher speeds, you will encounter higher speed differentials more frequently. Slower people pay for the roads too, and as long as they are not in the left lane there isn't really much to get upset about. Insert something about tolerance here, and paying attention to driving...

That is impressive. One driver dies, the other walks away.
